It’s our Anniversary

Posted by: Greg

Today, March 2nd, is Selena and my seven year anniversary… depending on who you ask. Selena actually thinks its March 5th. A bit of a flashback will help illuminate the discrepancy.

At some point in late February 1998, I asked Selena if she would like to go for coffee sometime. She accepted, and we planned to meet up at Brewed Awakenings on Tuesday the 2nd. Tuesday came, and we met for about a half an hour drinking coffee and getting better acquainted. A day or two thereafter, I asked Selena if she would go with me to dinner. She accepted and on Friday the 5th, we went out to a nice Italian restaurant and a movie.

Now, Selena contends that the latter was the first date. She confesses, because she frequently would meet up with people for coffee, she didn’t realize that was a date. She believes the first date was the dinner and a movie.

I contend that the first date was the first time we got together after asking her out, and I “asked her out” for coffee. True, it wasn’t much of a date, but since we were essentially strangers, I had no idea if we would get along well in a one-on-one environment, so I wanted a locale that didn’t have a set timetable (waiting for the check or the movie to end), to allow either of us to be able to leave at will if it wasn’t working.

Fortunately it worked great, we talked and laughed, and set up another date and another and another, and now seven years later we are living together and quite happy, but utterly unable to come to terms on when truly is our anniversary date.

At least you guys have 2 dates to argue about! Bobby and I had 1 date a month starting in October and finally got it together in January so we don’t have an offical anniversary date. I guess that’s what our wedding date will be.

We understand. We’ve used our first coffee gathering as our anniversary, but when we got married (which was held a week after our 5th anniversary), it complicated the whole thing.

Ultimately we’ve stuck with the original date.

well, for the wedding it was scheduling issues…otherwise that would have been the same date…but yep, the first date with coffee…but that was several hours longs….chatting, coffee, chatting, coffee…good times.

Congrats – 7 years is a long time!

Selena and I have had several movie outings, but there were always other people around. Does that mean she wouldn’t count them as real dates??? What’s a girl gotta do? ;-)

If you do the math backwards from your 7-year anniversary, your invitation to coffee would have been sometime in late February 1999.

You were in Florida in February of 1998… I helped drive you there a few weeks before.

In any case, Happy Belated Anniversary… whenever it actually was!

Good call, Jeff. I hadn’t met Selena in 1998, it was February of 1999.
