Okay, the banana bread candle I am finally starting to accept. I’ve heard from you guys, and apparently, it’s okay. Having a candle on the stove that can’t be anywhere else, not so odd.

A few more things got unpacked over the weekend. This is what I saw in the kitchen:

Can someone explain this to me?

Like the candle, I can’t move this anywhere without it finding it’s way back here.

Personally, I was excited about having this. Up until now, when I cook, I rest my utensils on any plate or paper towel I can find. So having this is great. (What do they call these things?) But I’m absolutely baffled as to why it needs to live here. I’d like to point out that Greg doesn’t cook much that can’t be made out of a box*** and I wasn’t even sure if he knew what this was used for or why he owned this thing. Although, upon further examination, I’m not sure if I know what the real function of this is. But I’m going to use it as a utensil-rester-thingee. The point is, no matter what it is, it lives here. It is not allowed to be moved anywhere else. (I’ve tried.)

***The disclaimer here is that Greg still cooks on a regular basis. Even if it is from a box, he has done quite the share of making sure we have something to eat each night and I am very appreciative of that.

I HATE SPOON RESTS!!!!! HATE HATE HATE! And Let me tell you…we’ve had the same exact adventure with the damn spoon rest. It has gone away at this point.

    Why the hate?

It’s another damn dish to wash. When, you could rest the spoon on the counter and just wipe up the mess it leaves. Or use a dish you may have held ingredients in prior to cooking. A dish you already have to wash. Or if dinner is coming out of a box, you may already have the box on the counter to follow the directions, so just flatten the box and rest the spoon there…and throw the box away when done.

HATE SPOON RESTS! When we had one, I always tried to hide it or place it somewhere, where it might be forgotten about. But it never failed to show up. I refused to wash it.

    But I love the candle!

    *weep*

Perhaps it’s because I grew up with having one.

Hee hee! I love watching this little domestic dramas play out between several couples on the blog. :-)

I grew up with spoon rests, but I’ll agree with Scotte in that they don’t necessarily make anything cleaner and still result in another dish to wash. Dad would often make homemade sauce stuff, and we’d still have to clean the spoon rest AND the counter, cuz he’d drip all over the place. So why not just set it on the counter?

Personally, I go with the flattened box / tin can of any of any of the ingredients as my place to rest any spoon.

Because that is where one would logically set down a utensil in the midst of cooking. And it doesn’t clutter your counter space.

Selena, I’m going to have to agree with greg on this one. I have a spoon rest, or shall I say two. NOne of which I have bought for myself, they were both gifts. I do only tend to keep one of them on the stove though. I like spoon rests and think they are very useful. I try not to cross contaminate my spoons with things that are already dirty. I tend to cook real food, not from a box though. Yes, it is another dish to wash, but if you have a dishwasher, it should be doing the washing for you.
PS-You guys really missed the good food on St. Patty’s day. I made Guinness Stew, it was awesome.

I read the weidest thing yesterday on the HGTV website. They recommend using Tang (in powder form) as a toilet cleaner. eeew!

Skang, also, if you ever did that you’d never know where the Tang is: under the sink, or in the cupboard? Heehee. Or maybe it would end up on the stove top with everything else. Or in the dryer. Ha! Ok. I’ll stop.

I am with scotte. Not quite as emphatically, but I don’t see the point, and the waste of having to clean it- I mean, if it goes, sure… but I don’t necessarily think that things with colors or distinctive prints can always follow one around from living place to living place- and especially not live in the exact same place. What if they don’t go in this new abode?

As a side note, I’m really not sure that I ever saw Greg use that for its intended purpose at his old apt… does he now?

Well said, Selena- personally, I don’t like anything living in the middle of the stove- I just think it’s weird and in the way. A tea kettle on one burner, sure, but not in the middle.
