Happy Halloween

Posted by: Greg

Has anyone else noticed that there are two Halloweens, one for the kids and one for the adults? This is the only holiday I can think of with a split personality.

Thanksgiving is eating with the family; St. Patty’s Day is drinking with your Irish or Irish for a Day friends; Valentines Day is showing affection for a loved one; Columbus Day is… it’s about… I mean, you celebrate by… well, you get the idea.

But Halloween serves two masters, it is primarily for the kids, but offers enough still for the adults to enjoy it too. It’s like the Pixar film of major holidays.

The kids get dressed up like their favorite cartoon character and pan-handle the neighborhood for candy. This is what Halloween is for them, and for most parents.

Yet, young kid-free adults will tell you that there is another side to Halloween. It’s about costume parties and bar crawls and for one day a year being able to dress like a stripper.

(Sidenote: When did that happen? Has Halloween always been so scantily-clad or is that something new in recent years. Either way, it keeps business booming at the Girls’s Costume Warehouse in Hackensack, NJ – trust me this short commercial is worth watching just for the “WTF, how did that get aired” moment).

I consider it a testament to Selena’s creativity that she never goes the stripper route with her Halloween costumes. She takes the time to craft a costume that is either very topical (the ass-kickin’ schoolgirl from Kill Bill) or quite imaginative (she went as packaging materials – creating a whole outfit out of bubble wrap and packaging tape).

As for me, I don’t hold a candle. I typically end up rehashing something I’ve seen or done before (Clark Kent turning into Superman will make another appearance today), or coming up with a pun that either obscure or mundane (Chicken-[dangling on a]-Cord-On-[a]-Blue-[tee-shirt] was pretty lame).
