I haven't done exhaustive research, but it seems the flies don't hover around the trash, but the fruit itself. Is this common? Do all homes with fruit bowls in the kitchen have this problem? Is it just seasonal?

I have a friend whose Dad did his grad school sci degree in Pittsburgh - and it involved experimenting with fruit flies. Apparently, one Friday afternoon, he didn't seal the cap on their little jar tight enough or something.. by Monday, the whole building was buzzing with fruit flies!

Darn right- that's why you'll never see flies at our house! Pantry's fully stocked w/ chips, cookies, and all other variety of non-fly attracting snacks.

I'm not sure the trade-off is quite balanced though : P

Great point. I've noticed the same thing, but only at work...maybe it's the peel/cores that end up in the trash. But great point, I never had chocolate kiss flies. Huh?
