Busy week

Posted by: Selena

As we sit in our home today with our pockets drained and a few lbs. heavier, I wondered what happened this week? I realized we have had quite an eventful week and caught at least three shows. Here are my reviews.

Monday
Helen Hayes: similar show portion as every year, pretty much, with the exception of the monkey attack being new. Lots of eating and drinking ensued after the ceremony. And that part is fun. So many actors in one place. Greg said the easiest conversation opener at any such event is “So tell me about YOU…”

Tuesday
Free Cone Day, and only day of relative rest.

Wednesday
31 cent scoop night, good bye h-hour for our brilliant associate designer, Ariel. Drinking ensued to drown out sorrows.

Thursday
Eddie Izzard! Our favorite cross-dressing Brit, and one of my favorite people of all time. He performed at DAR Constitution Hall, and we had these tickets months ago. Hadn’t seen his comedy in a while since he expanded on his film projects, but his comeback was great and he was just as fantastic as ever. Really toned down on the cross-dressing side for this one though, which I missed a little because I love his outfits. Acoustics were not so good so we felt like we missed a few jokes. Still…he’s awesome! Drank afterwards with friends Molly and Jason to recap.

Friday
Last minute, I found out that The Kills were playing at the Black Cat, a small DC venue. Fellow GG fans will recognize the tune Sour Cherry, the background song in the “OMG” commercials for GG. Our friend Chad’s description of their music: “They’re like the White Stripes except less AAAAAUGH and more dance-y.” Greg hates concerts so he respectfully declined, but our friends Rachel and Ben came out and Tanya and Jason trekked all the way up from VA to A. join me at the concert and B. be a play date for Greg.

My review: The crowd was starting to slip because of the fact that the concert was an hour and a half late. Finally, the opening band came on and unfortunately, were not a crowd-waking band. In fact, I’m not even sure I could classify them as music. Maybe performance art on ecstasy. They were terrible! Imagine watching a no talent Portishead or Bjork on lots of drugs combined with a video installation piece. Many, many drinks needed to keep myself there. These were the things setting the crowd for the Kills. I kept swearing to my friends that the Kills were more upbeat. Damned if they didn’t wake the crowd back up within the first song! They were awesome! People jumping up and down, happy music. Instant fan.
