Have had marathons to catch up...we are now caught up, minus last night's episode and the remaining ones of season 2. I've started reading the first book, but so far I don't like it as much I do the tv series. There are some changes from the books, to the screen, but I think they are good. Great show! I don't have HBO so I haven't seen it yet, but I haven't decided yet if I'll get it on DVD. I think it's one of those cases of having such a strong vision in your head from the books, and just feeling that some of the casting is way off. I am not a fan of Anna Paquin, though I think she could probably pull off Sookie okay other than the terrible accent I've heard. But the actors playing Bill and Eric and Sam don't look ANYTHING like those delicious visions of the men I have in my head... and some of the stories are different, as I hear. I am totally in love with the characters, so I strongly recommend reading the books. Like you said, it's grown-up Twilight, with more interesting characters and situations and mythology.
