Earlier this month, I went to the ER on the suspicion that I might have appendicitis. I didn’t. Instead, I had an inflammation that eventually went down with lots of antibiotics. Still, to be safe, the doctor has ordered a colonoscopy.
I’ve never had one before. Most people don’t really talk about it, much less announce it on their blog. But as I started talking about my fears with people, I’ve realized just how common it is.
What I didn’t factor in was the side effects of the anesthesia. Apparently, some people are really trippy with the drugs during the procedure. The doctor told me they wouldn’t even perform the procedure unless you have taken at least two days off of work and have someone driving you to and from.
So, of course, my first thought was the blog potential. With Greg driving me to and from, I thought he could do an “Ask Selena” session after I’ve been completely doped up with your questions, dear readers. Now is your chance to submit any zany question you’ve ever wanted me to answer while I am possibly borderline hallucinagenic and have had a scope inside me. We don’t know what the drugs are going to do, I may end up being quite normal and boring. The procedure is on March 31st, so have your questions in by March 29th. Questions may be monitored and we will publish only certain responses and comments if they are in fact, as entertaining as we think they could be.
Email questions to: questions@gregandselena.com.
Okay… this is borderline too weird for me to participate, but as I’ve experienced the effects of these drugs first-hand (twice) before, and seen it second-hand once, I realize the amusement potential of this notion, and will play along.
Though I don’t have any questions yet, but I’ll have to think of some in the next month… p.s. I had 2 endoscopies, which are different, and unfortunately for you, probably way more pleasant than colonoscopies. But, I had to be the DD for the latter before, so that was the second-hand experience to which I referred. I’m not sure if they’re EXACTLY the same drugs, but I know it’s similar, and I am always secretly wishing I will have to have another endoscopy just for the drugs! (no, I’m not an addict… I don’t think :\)
I’ve had a colonoscopy.
I hope they knock you out completely, rather than the half-out “dream state” anesthesia they did for me. i would’ve rather been completely out, cuz that’s not a pain I want to remember.
I’ve also had upper and lower GI’s, the former with an endoscopy down my throat that made my throat and neck hurt for days, and the latter with a barium enema. Not fun.
Enjoy your Golytely cleanse. It’s actually better than what I had to do for the barium enema. Your doctor’s right – don’t plan ANYTHING for the day before.
Having just had this done last week. You will feel like crap the day beofre, as all you do is drink the Tri-Lyte and go to the can. Then you get there and they knock you out. Coming out of the anesthesia I apparently kept trying to get out of the bed and go home, LWC and the nurse had to hold me down. I also kept flashing the recovery room. I have no recolection of any of this. Though I do remember destroying a Bobbie once we got home.
I really hope you are feeling better, Duke! We are seriously worried about you! But coming out of the anesthesia, that is hilarious.
Definitely worried whether or not I can make it for 24 hours without food. I guess I have to, but still freaking out about that part. You know me.
Glad to hear that you are doing better, Duke. Mmmm, Bobbies.
Hi Selena. Bill had one this summer and he was a lot of fun after the procedure. He was best friends with the nurses & doctors. Be preopared to toot ALOT after the test. Good luck & I hope that everything will turn out to be ok.
Are they allowing you popsicles (not red or purple) and chicken broth? That works out okay. Frankly, you won’t be hungry that day… you’ll be too busy focusing on other bodily functions.
