Where should we move?

Posted by: Greg

Rockville Town Center

We do really like our proximity to Rockville Town Center

Over the past few months Selena and I have been going to open houses and trying to formulate an idea of what we would want in our next home. We will be leaving condo living behind and moving into our own home with more room, and more storage and a big kitchen and preferably a man-cave.

So the type of home we want is really taking shape, but we still can’t figure out where we would like that home to be. For as long as we’ve been in this area, we really don’t know it all that well, especially from a real estate perspective.

So, help us out blog-nation. Tell us where you think is the best area for Greg and Selena to live. Is it staying in Rockville? Moving to Tysons? What about Alexandria? Is PG County sketchy? How about Huntington?

And for those visitors to this blog that are not in the beltway, don’t feel you can’t weigh in as well. Why should we move back to Delaware or up to New York or Boston or San Francisco or down to Atlanta or Florida?

Let us know where you think is the best place to live in the comments below.

If you moved to Cheverly, you’d be on the Orange Line, easy in for Selena for her work and a quick transfer for you.

It’s a great neighborhood and a beautiful pocket in Prince George’s County.

Move Here…lots of great food at Parkway Manor….dinner often!

Well first of all moving away from the DC area is NOT an option. So for those in other areas – hands off the Robletos. We OWN them!

Scott is right – there are definitely high and low points in PG County, but Cheverly is a definite plus. We’ve got great town services, our own police force, and a Metro station. Scott calls it “a Montgomery County address at PG County prices.” For Selena it’s a dream commute, and I still think a shorter one for Greg.

Should you decide to move to Virginia, I think you’ll find that the Tysons area is going to be too much of a clusterf*** for the next few years and should be avoided. There are some nice parts of Alexandria & Arlington that could be convenient. Certainly if you can find a good deal in the Del Ray/King Street/Old Town area it would be ideal for Greg and a relatively short commute for Selena.

And then of course there’s moving into the District – home prices there are probably still pretty sky high, but you never know. Just remember you’d be giving up a vote in Congress!

First of all, you are NOT allowed to leave the DC area. No discussion, period.

I’m partial to the MD suburbs over VA, so I’d say to look in Cheverly, Silver Spring, or maybe Bethesda / Rockville area. (I’d love it of you stay on the red line!)

You definitely cannot leave the DC area! I put in my vote for DC–close to work and EVERYTHING ELSE! That said, I admit having no representative in congress sucks and taxes are high. I’m partial to MD over VA–who knew there were so many Glebe Roads?

Move to Capitol Hill. That way I have a place to crash when I get off work at 2AM.

That’s really my only reasoning. It’s all about me here…

I can’t speak to where you should go, but I can confirm that PG county is indeed pretty sketchy. I was born in Silver Spring, and much more recently I lived in College park for about a year and a half. (Some of which was during my time @ the Fool, for reference.)

I hated it. Maybe you guys might feel different, but I thought the area by-and-large was pretty run down, the grocery stores always had low/poor inventory, and of course the traffic on that end of the beltway tends to be as bad if not worse than the section right by the Wilson bridge — even outside of rush hour.

I suggest Del Ray, ( Zip 22301) nice area, not as pricey as Old Town, and very close to work.

    Greg,

While I completely understand the voices who have weighed in with the pro-DC sentiment, there are other factors to consider. DC is indeed a wonderful city.

However, as a resident of Virginia and in particular of Alexandria, I can vouch for the pleasure derived from a shortened commute.

Additionally, as strange as it may seem, there are actually some nice things to do in Alexandria and Arlington that are fairly convenient and cultural.

Plus, your all’s peeps in DC and MD are but a short Metro ride from your new place.

I would personally recommend the Alexandria area because that’s where I live, but I know of many folks who are quite happy in Arlington, Shirlington, Crystal City, Springfield, etc. etc. . The communities within Alexandria are many. However, Del Ray pops into my mind as a potential neighborhood that may be of interest to you and Selena.

Anyhow, that’s my 2 cents Greg.

    Good luck.

    Cheers,
    Dave

@alexandria, I like to live closer to the Supply Store if my career change to a superhero did take off. As for right now, it’s still getting off the ground (haha, so many puns).

@faye I too find all the Glebe Road’s in Arlington very confusing. Further into VA you find every road is number six hundred and something. What’s with the lack of differentiation in the commonwealth, VA peeps?

For me, staying near the Metro is important if we are in MD or DC, not as much in VA, as the commute would not be such as issue from there since it doesn’t involve crossing or circumnavigating a major city.

I vote Fairfax, and I’m not talking about Virginia. Sorry kids, but Delaware had Greg first. He moved down to DC to marry Selena and now it’s time to bring her home!

I feel I must at least throw in another opinion from The First State (of Greg), if not necessarily a vote for it. I concur, that it is not as if DC ‘owns’ Greg as he spent almost 30 of his natural born years in DE… and we did ‘have him first’ as The Duck pointed out : )

However, I don’t know that this warrants the traditional clubbing over the head of the wife, and dragging her back to the home cave… I do think you guys seem to be of a more metro-centric lifestyle/personality. In my opinion, your many interests would be better served in a larger metro area than Wilmington, DE (Philly proximity aside- it really isn’t at all the same thing.)

But, I’m not saying what area- that’s up to you! Pros and cons lists- it helps.
