At the Motley Fool, they have this one crazy perk called the Fool’s Errand. Each month one person is selected at random from a lottery (weighted by tenure). That winner then has to immediately (read: within the next two weeks) take two full weeks off with absolutely no contact with the company. There is no budget provided, but nor is there any agenda, the time is completely your own. The one catch is that at the next all company meeting you have to present what you did, so that adds pressure to make it remarkable in some way.
This is all pretext to tell you that this morning at the December Fool Huddle meeting where despite incredible odds, I won the Fool’s Errand.
I have no idea what I’m going to do with this opportunity. So, help me out, what would you do?
you wanna go on a road trip with me to new orleans for new years? it’ll take a week.
I can think of 3 types of things you could do:
1. Focus on a hobby. In my own case I would probably take dance classes every day (if I could afford it).
2. Take a road trip! Although that’s probably not as attractive an option when leaving a pregnant wife behind…
3. Spend your time on home improvement, with before-and-after photos. With the new place – any thought to painting? Building some bookshelves?
Teach Sookie to do something amazing. Ever see the show SuperFetch on Animal Planet? I think that could have some wow factor. Unless of course Sookie is too young… then I would go with a major home improvement project, maybe the baby’s room? a man cave?
These are all good ideas above. What about making/finding some list of things to do before you become a parent? Fun things that you won’t be able to do for a while before the baby comes… like, I dunno, play with lawn darts? Stay up all night eating only Cheetos for sustenance?
Finish Deadwood!
