A few months ago, my poor brother Dean tried to give me a very nice compliment at dinner as I was growing bigger and bigger. He said, “You’re going to be one of those pregnant women that still dresses all hot, aren’t you?”

What Dean means: “You’re going to be one of those pregnant women that will still take care of themselves and buy cute outfits to fit their body shape instead of letting go and raiding their husbands closets for gym shorts and dirty t-shirts to wear all the time, aren’t you?”

What I heard: “You’re going to be one of those pregnant women that’s going to pretend that they’re not and are going to continue to hooch it up still, while your tube top rides up your belly as you go to the clu-ub, aren’t you?”

So caught in the crosshairs, my first reaction was offended, as I didn’t think the sweater I was wearing that day was particularly hooch, yet I wasn’t quite sure. I don’t know why I quite went there as the initial interpretation, but now I’m extremely complimented by what Dean said once I figured it out. Maybe because there are pregnant people I see in our Childbirth class that have gone the route of wearing their husbands gym shorts and t-shirts all the time. Unfortunately, these past few weeks on modified bed rest have caused me to spiral in that direction as well, as my outfits are mix and match oversize college tee shirts, Greg’s undershirts and various pajama bottoms.

Maybe I’ll cut some tees in half so they’ll be crop tops.

All you need are some iron-on patches that say sassy things, and those t-shirts will be hip.
