Following the beautiful wedding at the Wayfarers Chapel, the cocktail hours began at the Villa. The Villa was technically not a reception destination, but a lavish condo in the nearby Terranea Resort where Jeff and Katie and separately, Katie’s family stayed during the trip to LA. It had three bedrooms, a big open main room, dining room and kitchen and a bathtub large enough to fit the majority of the wedding party. We know, we took that bathtub picture, and a number of others while enjoying the food and booze, and between watching the great through-the-years slideshow and listening to the custom playlist that almost didn’t happen. I was responsible for the sound system and lost one of the cords – a male to male headphone jack cord. I was sure I killed the music, and was ready to give up. I couldn’t find it and who would happen to have such an obscure cord on them. Susan. Susan would. I was shocked, but she pulled the very cord needed right from her purse and the music played on.

The full-on reception was at the Point Vincente Lighthouse and Interpretive Center, just down the road, also on the water’s edge overlooking the Pacific Ocean. After introducing the party, Jeff danced with his new bride to a song I was not familiar with, then Katie danced with her dads to another song I didn’t know called Daughter in the Water. I think having kids has made me sentimental and I tried to have a moment holding Kaylee watching a father-daughter dance, but it didn’t happen cause she squirmed and wandered off (did I mention she’s walking now) and I had to get my cousins to go chase after her cause all the wedding party was holding positions through the dances. My cousin then upon collecting Kaylee subsequently dropped her. Only a little, and still Selena and I held composure and didn’t move out of our spots watching the dances. But it made us punchy, so by the time the Mother-Son dance came on and another groomsman Jim started to sway and sing along we were on board. Kaylee was fine by the way.

The dinner was is a delicious blur to me, cause I was focused on what comes after, the speeches, including the maid-of-honor Gretchen’s, the matron-of-honor’s, Selena’s, and my own the Best Man Speech. I’ve had to give one Best Man Speech before and maybe it was cause it was one of a series of speeches from 3 best men, and maybe it was cause we were told keep it real short, and I don’t think I gave it my all, and years later I still regret that. I couldn’t let that happen this time around, especially after the incredible Best Man Speech that Jeff gave at my wedding (which I am still seeking a video or transcribed copy if anyone has one). I set Jeff’s speech as the high bar to reach and spent a few weeks working out what I hoped would be a good balance of storytelling and advise, both sweet and funny, and addressing both Jeff and Katie. I felt confident going in and really was happy with the delivery. Here is the transcript that I ad-libbed from:

Thank you, so if I could have your attention, I’m Greg Robleto, I am Jeff’s younger brother and your best man for today’s festivities. I’ve been given a few moments to say a few words about the happy couple.

But before we get into talking about Jeff and Katie, I quickly want to say thank you to some very special people, without them, Katie and Jeff wouldn’t be here today. Quite literally. They have done so much to get us to this place today including raising two wonderful people that we are happy to celebrate today. Moms and dads, thank you.

Now back to the newlyweds, Mrs. Robleto, are we going with that? Right to share the same name with the kids. Future kids, calm down grandpa. Mrs. Robleto, you look incredible. And Mr. Robleto, you are looking pretty good too, even though I do believe you just copied my outfit tonight.

We used to dress alike all the time, granted it was when we were toddlers. I’ve seen photos. We were always dressed in the same outfits. I assume BOGO discounts must have been all the rage in the 70s.

But it was okay, toddler Greg was totally okay with it, cause he was in awe of his older big brother. Toddler Greg would follow toddler Jeff anywhere. And then later, as I got older that hero-worship changed to genuine friendship, and while what can be greater for a kid with a ton of toys and a healthy imagination than to have a best friend who lives in the same house?

Growing up with Jeff was great. We’d spend hours playing, the two of us, in the unfinished basement of our Hockessin house, playing with all our Legos, and Transformers and our favorite, Star Wars action figures. I remember those days so fondly, how creative it all was, creating entire expansive worlds out of our shared imagination.

I’m trying to remember when exactly that period ended, but I’m not really great with names and dates. I tried falling back to Danaher Math, but I don’t see how knowing Grandpop Danaher fought in World War II in 1944 really helps pinpoint the date.

Please pardon me, that was kind of an inside joke, Danaher Math. One of many many inside jokes that I or many others in this room share with Jeff. It occurred to me that I could easily go down that path of referencing a bunch of inside jokes in this speech, but I promised myself I wouldn’t. It would come off contrived working references to Phajze and Chicken-Chicken into this Best Man Speech. And No, busting out a Beep Bop Boop Bop Beep Robot Jeff impersonation wouldn’t make any sense to the majority of the guests. It’s bad form, I am not going to do any of that.

Where was I? Oh yes, I can’t remember dates and places. I’ve never really had to, because I could always just ask Jeff. He remembers everything. He’s a living database of his own personal history: past experiences, events both large and small he can remember dates, times, places and who was there. I always enjoyed this trait about my big brother, because, one, it meant I never had to remember anything “I don’t know, go ask Jeff.” And two because I took it to be a testament for how much Jeff cares about the moments in life that were special to him.

Jeff can surely provide some details starting from elementary or middle school, but it’s high school and college memories, where he met so many of these great friends we have here today, where Jeff can provide all sorts of dates and times and places. And from the first time he met Katie. We’ll he could outdo a picture by providing at least a thousand words about the moment, where they were, what she wore, what he was thinking, what they ate.

I envy how much Jeff can turn-on his memory and take in moments he can tell are the big ones in his life. I’m sure every aspect of today is being properly recorded, because this is as special as it gets. So, Jeff, enjoy this moment, take it in, this moment right now with all the friends and family who have traveled great distances to be here with you today.

And Katie now it’s your turn. It’s your turn to join Jeff in creating whole worlds out of your shared imagination, except you will be creating the vision of the world you two want to share: what you want to do, where you want to live, who you want to be; and as far as I can tell, creating that vision is the secret to a happy marriage: so you end up not just looking at each other, just together looking in the same direction and taking that journey together. That and remembering that the journey is the fun part, no matter where you arrive. But I do believe, that whatever you two dream for yourselves, you will be able to achieve it cause you’ll be doing it together.

So, please raise your glass and share with me in wishing for Katie and Jeff a tremendous journey full of happiness and love.

Cheers!

And here is the latter half on a somewhat shaky but still discernable Flip-cam video captured by our friend, Erin. Thank you for sharing this, Erin.

Following the orating, we three speech-givers congratulated ourselves with a shot from the bar of something nasty, and that set the tone for a lot of booze and merriment and plenty of dancing, notably with my wife, my Mom and my daughter There was a great energy full of laughter and good times.

At the very end of the night, after my baby and my cousin’s baby were both tuckered out in our baby tent, I was giving tips on Jeff’s behalf to the DJ and caterers and in doing so saw the barkeep packing up the booze. “Where is that going?” I asked. “I don’t know” he stated “it belongs to the bride and groom, who should it go to?” “You can give that to me” I confidently replied, and with that I was immediately dubbed the host of the after-party, the after-after-party, and the following night’s party, the final night in LA party and a week later mini-party up in San Francisco.

Oh, did I mention as a gift for being a groomsman, Jeff gave us all custom bobble-heads of ourselves? Here’s mine and a few more pictures:

The reason we were in LA is because of the Wayfarer’s Chapel, this small church on the Cliffside looking over the Pacific Ocean that my new sister-in-law Katie found when living in LA a few years ago and just fell in love with. And she was right; it was one of the two most breathtaking wedding locations I’ve ever been too, with only a similar cliffside chapel in Hawaii belonging at the same level.

We first saw the chapel during the rehearsal for the wedding. It was a fairly straightforward process, which left myself and the other groomsmen a bit lax in our focus, high-fiving and beat-boxing “Here Comes the Bride” as Katie practiced walking down the aisle. Kaylee was adorable walking in as the flower girl, holding hands with Selena. Kaylee had just learned to walk, but was not comfortable enough to come down on her own, still she nailed it in rehearsal.

The actual performance went a little differently. I don’t think it was so bad that Kaylee had her hand in her mouth the whole walk down, that’s still adorable and in the cute little dress we had her wearing she melted everyone in attendance. Then she melted down herself. She didn’t really want to let go of Selena, who as the matron-of-honor had a special place to stand. All the grandparents and the toys in the front row were not enough to keep Kaylee from crying out the whole remainder of the entrances, including Katie’s walk down the aisle. Hopefully that is not what will be remembered from her wedding day, neither that nor that right before the ceremony began the bridesmaids had to send a desperate text “Code Brown in the Bridal Suite, bring Kaylee’s diaper bag ASAP”.

Instead what should be remembered was the gorgeous day. Every day previous had been cloud-covered, but it was clear and sunny and from the chapel you could see all the way to Catalina Island. Also, the great music they chose performed by Katie’s brother Ben, and the sweet ceremony that began with the honoring of the parents and fun, interesting and poignant readings.

I had one role left in the ceremony to hand over the rings. No problem, except that they got momentarily stuck on my finger where I was holding them, as the Best Man does. But that quickly resolved and did not hold up the ceremony.

Then Katie and Jeff exchanged the rings, repeating their vows, lighting the unity candle and with a kiss were suddenly Mr. and Mrs. Robleto.

There were a lot of small tasks necessary to get prepared for the wedding from trying on the tuxes, returning the tuxes, shopping for booze and other small items for the cocktail hour, but there were also a lot of more memorable tasks as well, such as playing disc golf with the groom-to-be, meeting everyone at the Observatory or a photo shoot worthy of 90210.

Jeff had found a disc golf course on his last trip to the West Coast but didn’t have a chance to play. It was all over the hillside overlooking Dodgers stadium, and that is a very unforgiving terrain, one bad shot and your disc can roll and roll halfway down the hill. This happened to Jeff multiple times. I played more conservatively and didn’t have to chase my discs nearly as often, but my unaggressive play combined with bad putting cost me and I lost by five shots. It’s okay though, cause 1) I never beat Jeff and 2) the day before his wedding is not a good time to start.

While Selena and I had wanted to see Warner Bros. studio tour or Universal Studios, we didn’t plan well for either, so the only trip we had to Burbank was to the Bob Hope airport, which is not much bigger than a shopping center, to pick up Katie’s dad and drive him with us to the Griffith Observatory where everyone was meeting.

I liked the idea of a rendezvous point for all the people coming in at different times to meet at before the actual wedding. The Observatory proved a bit of a tough destination because it was so dark and crowded and hard to get up to. It didn’t help that the kitchen closed early, but getting past all that, it was a great time. I toured around the Observatory with Kaylee looking at the fun exhibits or just the views of LA or the stars, and would just run into friends that I haven’t seen in years. It was a treasured experience.

Another moment I enjoyed was sneaking onto the grounds of Torrance high school, wearing our tuxes, to have a photo shoot of the groomsmen at the location that was used for West Beverly High on the 90s version of 90210. Selena tells me that 90210 was a chic show, but that was never my experience. I recall everyone watching it. It was just part of growing up, and so carving out a little piece of that and weaving it into the LA wedding experience was a lot of fun, and I know that the groom very much enjoying doing so.

Once we’d thoroughly exhausted all the classic 90210 poses we could come up with, we headed down to Rancho Pales Verdes for the wedding.

This blog is typically all about Selena and I, but I wanted to take a minute to express how excited I am for my brother Jeff, who over the holidays finally popped the question to his long-time girlfriend, Katie.

Now making it about me again.

I don’t know that Jeff and Katie know how often I get asked “When are they going to get married?”, and for the longest time I’ve been able to point out an event or goal in the future that they are focusing on first, such as:

They want to wait until Katie graduates from school / finds a job / finds a different job

They didn’t want to pull focus from Selena and my engagement / wedding / announcing of the baby

They want to get settled into their new careers/ new house

They want to wait until after Ben comes back form NZ / Katie comes back from LA / hell freezes over.

And then right when I was starting to run out of milestones to prioritize on their behalf first, Jeff goes ahead and asks Katie to marry him.

We couldn’t be happier for their engagement and to have Katie officially become a member of the family.

On Friday, January 29th I was standing beside a big projection screen in front of the entire company of The Motley Fool. I took a deep breath and began:

“Hi everyone, I’m Greg, and if you don’t know me it may be because you started working here in January and I’ve been out most of the month on my Fool’s Errand.”

“I think the Fool’s Errand is a fantastic initiative. I had the most remarkable and rewarding time. But wait, this is The Motley Fool, we don’t evaluate success based just on word of mouth. No, we look at the numbers. So I submit to you, Fool’s Errand – The Report.”

“All right, let’s dive right in.”

“I spent the first half of the trip moving into my new home. You can see in the upper left a chart of which level of my home I spent time unpacking. It turned out most of the work needed was in the attic and basement. Notice here too the number of boxes left to unpack: one. I’m very proud of that.”

“Enough about moving in, lets go on to the road trip. I drove down to Florida with my wife and my puppy, 2969 miles in total. I am presuming that’s expendable, I’ll be submitting an reimbursement report later today.”

“You can see here a breakdown of where I slept each night of the Fool’s Errand, about half in my home, and then a little less with relatives and less still in hotels and B&Bs including SoBe You in South Beach which I highly recommend and La Quinta in Savannah which… well, not so much.”

“While in Florida we travelled down to the Florida Keys and then back to Orlando to spend some time with family. We did hit all four Disney parks in one day. You can see in the lower right here a breakdown of time spent in each park, pretty balanced Disney experience. Also, I want to call attention to this score right here, 39 or -14. Yes, I played a sick game of mini golf  and held the low score of the day at Fantasia Gardens.”

“The weather was surprisingly cold, you see here 19 degrees in Orlando. The locals found that novelty fun and interesting. Me… not so much, I knew cold, I left cold back in DC, I wanted some warmth, which did come towards the end of the trip, 78 degrees on the last days in Orlando.”

“Let’s talk about what I ate while I was away. I totally recommend Puerto Sagua in South Beach for excellent Cuban food, and hey, did you know that there is still a Bennigans in operation in Orlando?! I was so excited to get to have a Monte Cristo sandwich again.”

“You can see her a breakdown of what I drank. We all know it’s important that we have a nice variety of beverages, and I think I achieved that here.”

“Now, exercise… let’s not talk about exercise, wasn’t much to speak of.”

“Ah, entertainment, yes. I highly recommend the Finding Nemo Stage Show in Animal Kingdom, it is Broadway caliber, by far the best thing I watched while I was away. And the worst… that would be my Eagles losing to the Cowboys twice while I was away. Ugh, Cowboys.”

“Oh, there’s my dog. I am very happy about this number, zero accidents in the house or car, she finally became housebroken during this trip. I will also point out this number here, six attacks by poodles. I don’t know what the deal with ShihTzus and Poodles but there is some bad blood there.”

“Finally, if I may tell a quick story, two years ago my wife and I got married on a very warm day in the Florida Keys, and a staff member at the resort, trying to be helpful, put our cake, well actually cake topper, in the freezer to keep when it should have been out thawing. When it came time to cut the cake it was frozen solid, there was no penetrating it. So, my wife and I never got to eat our wedding cake.”

“Knowing I had this opportunity  of the Fool’s Errand, I convinced my wife to join me on the trip to Florida, and we contacted that same bakery and ordered that same cake, and we went to that same spot on the resort where we married. It was two years late, but we finally got to enjoy our wedding cake. And it was damn good too.”

“That alone made this whole Fool’s Errand worthwhile, so thank you The Motley Fool for providing me this opportunity, and thank you all for letting me share my experiences with you today.”

And with that I returned to my seat, smiling, knowing that I had made the most of my Fool’s Errand and the most of presenting it back to the people at The Motley Fool.

Where does the time go? I suppose its because I can play back the day in my head so vividly, that it doesn’t seem that long ago that I stood by the water’s edge at that tropical paradise and awaited as a beautiful bride walked down the aisle and became my wife. Happy Anniversary, Selena.

Happy Anniversary to us.

Today is our one year anniversary, and Selena and I are as happy today as the day we got married a year ago on that beach in the Florida. Keys.  You probably have seen some of the pictures, you may have even taken a few, but only in the past couple months could did we finally compile a complete album of all the wedding photos, because only recently did we finally recieve our professional wedding photos.

After the wedding, the photographer was supposed to get our photos turned around to us in twelve weeks. Unfortunately a tragic event happened, (her house burnt down). While that did not destroy our photos, they were in the lab being processed, it was so devastating to our photograther and her son, that she had to prioritize rebuilding their life over fulfilling her obligations and the result was many people’s photos including ours got delayed.

So, we were supposed to be able to post our wedding photos around Christmas, instead it took significantly longer, but alls well that ends well, because we have the photos now, and you can see the best of the photos on our Flickr group “Greg and Selena.”  And we added a few below here as well.

Enjoy.

Selena and I went to the wedding of our very good friends Lauren and Duke this past Saturday. It was a bit wet, with don’t-call-me-hurricane Hanna visiting the area at the same time, but is that not perfect weather for a couple that refers to themselves as “ducks”. Here are a few more learnings from a great wedding weekend in Delaware:

Six player Settlers of Catan is very difficult and quite awesome

You can take a stylish outfit up another notch with argyle socks

Northern Exposure had some pretty interesting monologues, I should pick up a season of that show.

Golf courses start to look like Slip-n-Slides after 20 inches of rain

OAR’s “Hey Girl” is a not a slow song, but still a great First Dance song, why is it not already on my iPod?

The birthday record dude, Captain Zoom, is still making records, who knew?

You can start a successful conga line to “Come on Eileen”

When someone inadvertently makes a noise like the Penguin in Batman 2, it can spawn a whole series of replications and embellishments, including rigid flipper-like hand gestures and lots of people going “Waaaaannhh”, as it captured in this photo:

And finally, not a learning (because we already knew it), but a re-emphasizing that Lauren and Duke are a great couple and will surely have a long and happy life together. Congrats Ducks!

We’ll be up in Delaware for the wedding for our good friend Duke and Lauren’s wedding; but unlike every other trip to Delaware ever, we won’t be staying with the parents or siblings or friends, we are staying in a hotel.

I really like this plan.

About 8 years ago, Duke and I flew out to Nebraska for our friend Rich’s wedding. We had a blast, and decided that was in no small part due to all us fun guests staying in the same hotel together for the weekend. When you get all these fun people in one place for longer than just the three hours, but overnight or for a weekend, all in a celebratory mood, it can not help but become something memorable.

We agreed that we push for that for our own weddings.

Selena and I did more than push, we sort of forced this issue by having the wedding in the Keys. And we have been told it was pretty memorable, so the theory still holds.

As of tomorrow all the usual troublemakers will be descending on the DoubleTree in Wilmington for the wedding weekend. I have little doubt that this wedding weekend will prove the theory right again.
